HELP YOUR CHILD CREATE HABITS FOR A SUCCESSFUL YEAR IN SCHOOL

The first few weeks of a new school year offers your child an opportunity to start off fresh.  Help your child shine in class this year by establishing habits that will promote success in school and in life.

Make sure your child will:

  • Get enough shut-eye.  Preteens and teens won't succeed if they're snoozing at their desks.  So make sure your child gets to bed at a reasonable time each night.  And have your child UNPLUG before lights-out.  That means no TV, loud music, computers, or PHONE in the hour leading up to bedtime.  Also, an alarm clock that plays soothing music is recommended.  No one likes to be awakened by a loud, annoying alarm!
  • Eat a healthy lunch.  It's great that your child eats breakfast every morning at home or at school, but don't forget about lunch!  After all, we all need the midday fuel.  So send him/her to school with a nutritious meal - not a sack full of chips, cookies, and soda.  Or, have your child eat the nutritious lunches or salads in the school cafeteria.
  • Use the right workspace.  Be sure your child has a place to do homework - a desk, the bedroom floor or the kitchen table.  It should be quiet, comfortable and well-lit.  It should also be as free from distractions as possible.  Make sure it's stocked with plenty of paper, pens and pencils.
  • Study ahead.  Don't let your student get into the "cramming" habit!  If he/she knows there's a test coming, remind him/her to review the material a little bit each day.  This is much more effective than trying to memorize tons of material the night before an exam.
  • Keep a close check on grades.  Students will now be able to check their grades on HAC at home and at school using their own student login.  Students are currently being trained in this process.  Please encourage your student to check their grades often to see their grades, missing assignments, etc.   Parents, you too, can check their grades at home using HAC.  If you do not know you login or password, please email me at kandis.howard@mansfieldtigers.org.
