With school approaching and summer practices winding down, members of the Mansfield cross country team took a break at the Alma Aquatic Park on August 3.
For the second consecutive summer, MHS long distance athletes cashed their accumulated miles into reward. By showing competency through a rigorous physical training test or by exceeding the mandated attendance policy for summer running sessions, qualifying team members earned an afternoon picnic and water park trip.
“They’ve known since early May what the deal was,” Coach John Mackey explained. “Show up in shape, get further in shape, or face the test if you want to go beat the heat with a trip to the water park. This is the second year our cross country kids ended early season training with a fun reward trip.”
About 20 players met the criteria and attended the Alma excursion according to the coach. A few others earned the right but were unable to attend because of commitments to other sports or work.
“It’s really a fun day,” Mansfield’s head coach continued. “They enjoy the water attractions while I cook. Then we pray, eat, and get to know each other through a series of bonding scenarios. It’s just a nice treat for all of us while getting away from the training for a little while.”
