About the MES Library

The Mansfield Elementary Media Center is a child friendly environment that encourages reading, learning, and the use of technology. The library has seven computers for student use and one for circulation, presentation, and management purposes. Other technology includes a Smart TV. The library currently has approximately 6,500 print holdings. The library also has electronic services such as Encyclopedia Britannica Online, and Ebsco (a magazine and newspapers article database).
These services are provided for participating libraries through the Arkansas State Library Traveler Project. An Internet Filter is also in place on all school computers.

Classes

  • All classes K-4 meet in the library for a minimum of 40 minutes per week.
  • Classes include reading enrichment activities, learning activities that support state standards, and book checkout time.

Accelerated Reader Program
The Accelerated Reader program is designed to encourage reading practice by creating a competitive environment and an incentive program. Students select books that are marked as having an AR quiz. They then read the book and take a computer quiz which awards them points based on the number of questions answered correctly, and the reading level and length of the book. To see the most reading growth, students should maintain an average of 85% correct on their quizzes and read within their reading ranges. The STAR test determines the reading range and is given three times per year. There are currently over 6000 Accelerated Reader quizzes available at our school. The tests are purchased with District funds. School-wide contests are held every year to encourage the Accelerated Reader Program. Teachers also select their own incentives to encourage students to accumulate points. The program is excellent and has been linked to increasing literacy test scores.
